FIBD - Is Language a Barrier in Doing Business Internationally?

For native English speakers, the simple answer to this question is “NO.” Language technology excellent and getting better, and if English is not a preferred language of upper management, most of those international businesses will have already hired the personnel to fulfill such need.  This is especially prevalent in international sales and marketing as well as sourcing manufacturing, raw materials, etc.. internationally.

However, there comes a certain stage, either in the beginning or somewhere along the way to operational optimization that it will become apparent that a deeper level of connection is needed with your source or clientele.

The main question and core practical advice that I have to offer come in the form of the following CRITICAL questions:

1)    Who do you want to talk to in the company? And, are you getting the best, most honest and true version of them?

2)    Who do you want to listen to in the company? And, are you getting the best, most honest and true version of them?

If these two questions lead to insecurity in your day to day and long term business relations with another company that you work or partner with, or with clients who you sell and market to, then you may want to consider investing in this core competency sooner than later.
